LED with or without CAN-BUS: what do you recommend to the customer?
The customer walks into the store or the service shop and asks for "an LED bulb for the dome light" or "for the position light." The question that matters most is not the color or the power, but this: does their car need a CAN-BUS LED or not? If you choose wrong, the customer comes back with an error on the dashboard or a bulb that flickers. In this guide we explain the difference and what to recommend, using examples from the CARGUARD range.
What CAN-BUS means in brief
Many modern cars constantly check the bulbs through the on-board computer: it measures the current drawn and, if it is too low, it considers the bulb to be burnt out. An LED draws much less than a classic filament bulb, so the car may display an error message, and the bulb may flicker or stay slightly lit when the light is off.
An LED with CAN-BUS has built-in electronics that "fool" this check, so the car sees it as a normal bulb. An LED without CAN-BUS is simpler and draws very little power, suitable for cars that do not check the bulbs on that circuit.
When to recommend an LED without CAN-BUS
- older cars without a bulb-checking system;
- circuits that are not monitored by the computer (often the interior or trunk lighting);
- the customer wants the minimum-consumption option.
Example: CLD003 is a T10 LED, 12V, 0.25W and 18 lumens, for interior and trunk.

When to recommend an LED with CAN-BUS
- newer cars that display an error for bulbs;
- the customer has previously come back with an LED that "gives an error" or flickers;
- exterior and auxiliary lights (position, license plate) where checking is frequent.
Examples from the range: CAN101 (BA9S, 12V, 3W, 56 lumens, for interior or trunk), CAN106 (36 mm festoon, 3W, 54 lumens, for the dome light and license plate lighting) and CAN139 (P21W, BA15S base, 880 lumens, 12–24V).

What to do if an error still appears
For more difficult cases there are error cancellers, which are installed next to the LED. In the CARGUARD range you will find, for example, CBX002 (5W, 12V, recommended for T10/W5W position LEDs) and CBX004 (set of 2 for H7 base, 10–30V). It is worth keeping a few in stock next to the LEDs: they solve the customer's problem on the spot.
3 questions to ask the customer before the sale
- What car do they have and from what year? For newer cars, start directly with the CAN-BUS option.
- What light is the bulb for? Interior, trunk, position or license plate — each has its own base (T10, BA9S, festoon, BA15S, BA15D).
- Have they had problems with LEDs before? If so, recommend CAN-BUS and, if needed, an error canceller.

How to organize the shelf
- clearly separate the LEDs with and without CAN-BUS on the shelf or in drawers;
- group them by base type (T10, BA9S, festoon, BA15S, BA15D), so you can quickly find the right bulb;
- keep the error cancellers next to the LEDs, as a complementary sale;
- tell the customer that LEDs for exterior lights are intended for use off public roads — as also stated on each product's page.
The CARGUARD range has LEDs with and without CAN-BUS for interior, trunk, position and license plate, plus error cancellers — all under our own brand, with photos and technical details on the platform.
